As mentioned in one of my previous posts photography can be an expensive hobby. Many people think it’s not worth spending a lot of money in photo gear unless a return on investment is expected, otherwise mentioned “you get your money back”. This made me ask myself this question quite often in the past: “should I start taking photos for money”? Should I become a professional photographer?

Photography is expensive. Depending on the chosen photography genre(s) an enthusiast might spend some good hundreds or even thousands of dollars on the gear. And this is only a small part compared to a professional’s expenses. It is also very time consuming, especially at editing.

What Photography Means to Me

I started “serious” amateur photography 6 years ago when I bought my first DSLR camera. At that time I thought that such a camera automatically means better pictures. This is what many beginners believe as if there was some magic within the gear. Needless to say that editing was a foreign language for me so “straight-from-the-camera” JPEGs were the only possible output.
